Ban vs Pak: Spinners dent Bangladesh's run-chase

New Delhi: Mohammad Hafeez's double attack removes Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah in quick succession to dent Bangladesh's run-chase in the Asian Cup opener.

Hafeez bowled out Iqbal 64 and then removed Mahmudullah without allowing him to get off the mark and reduced the hosts to 135/5.

Aizaz Cheema gave Bangladesh the first blow as he sent a dangerous Nazimuddin after Pakistan set 263-run target in the Asian Cup opener on Sunday.

Nazimuddin scored a fiery 30 which was studded with four boundaries and a dazzling six before being caught by Umar Gul off Cheema.

Jahurul Islam and Iqbal then consolidated the innings. However, Shahid Afridi bowled out Jahurl Islam and Mushfiqur Rahim in successive overs to peg back Bangladesh.

Previously, Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed struck half centuries before Umar Gul to the strong blows to the end lifted Pakistan to 262 for eight.

Hafeez (89 off 126 balls) and Jamshed (54 off 64) formed by putting on 135 runs for the first Wicket in just 28 overs, but Shahdat Hossain (3/53) and Shakib Al Hasan (2/41) struck a crucial moment to help the hosts to fight back in the game.

But Gul, little, spoiled Bangladesh's plans with a lively 39 off 25 balls.

Hoping that the pitch at the Shere Bengal National Stadium would offer some assistance to their seamers early, Bangladesh Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim chosen field after the coin landed on his behalf.

Things, however, did not pan the way Mushfiqur expected as the two openers gave Pakistan a perfect Launchpad. Both did not flashy, but effective nevertheless.

Jamshed was the more aggressive of the two as he found the wall five times, in addition to hitting six.

Hafeez agreed to rotate the strike while hitting the occasional boundaries.

Bangladesh then made a vigorous fightback and the breakthrough they needed, came in the form of Jamshed the Wicket in the 28th over when Mushfiqur ran the batsman after receiving shots of Shakib.

Living up to the tag of being unpredictable side, Pakistan collapsed, and a 160 for two in the 33 and over, they fight to 198 for seven.

As the middle order, which has the experienced Younis Khan and the talented Umar Akmal, failed miserably, Gul provided the much needed push down in order to help Pakistan post a challenging total.

Gul, who struck five fours and a six, found an ally in Sarfraz Ahmed (19 off 28), and the two added 53 crucial runs for the eighth Wicket.
