Kohli's elevation indication of future plans of selectors

Virat Kohli came the next big thing in Indian cricket after the selectors had anointed the young Indian batsman as the vice captain of the team for the Asian Cup, on Wednesday.

The Delhi middle-order batsman has the figures and the pride for the selectors to leapfrog himover the stakes of a few others in the group with captaincy ambitions.

Both Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, it would appear, just a chance to be a future India captain as well as Suresh Raina, who briefly looked to be in line of succession, at least in one-day event.

Kohli's numbers speak for themselves-the highest ODI run-getter in 2011 with 1381 runs from 34 matches in 47.62 with four centuries.

The 23-year-old batsman so far managed 373 runs at 53.29 with two 50s and one century in the Commonwealth Bank one-day series so far. It came on the heels of his 300 runs in the four-Test series with a century and fifty apiece.

Sehwag, apparently 'rested' for Bangladesh, it was miserable presence in both Tests and ODIs this summer, averaging 13, five triangular series matches and finishing with 198 in Tests at 24.75.

Gambhir, in spite of his three 50s in one-dayers and two Tests on, came a soft presence and does not seem proactive enough to deliver him have the energy to work.

Raina's shares fell as a batsman against fast bowlers on bouncy and seaming tracks and it is not certainty in the three formats of the game.

With Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni showing poor technique in the Tests, to go with his stated position to review its role in Test cricket in 2013, the selectors have clearly shown an urgency to streamline the succession issue.

The young man still has problems with his volatile temper, once shining in the middle finger in a crowd in Sydney and regularly flaring in press conferences against Australian cricketers and fans.

Selectors also showed remarkable trust Dhoni to be in the management of affairs in spite of his two miserable series in England and Australia.

Clearly, the job of captaincy for support for the Ranchi cricketer as long as he wants it, more that he was not trying to foreign conditions to fight with at least two years.

The five wise men have chosen to deal with the smoldering discord in the drive, highlighted by mass media and doused by the board, for siding with Dhoni and the "rest" of Sehwag not deceived anyone.

If anything, it would force the grumbling voices in the unit to fall in line behind the powerful Dhoni, strengthening their hand.

With equations in the team being reviewed by the selectors, the present team has served to emphasize two very critical points-one, Dhoni is the most powerful man in Indian cricket, and two, Kohli is now the chosen one for the future.

It would be interesting to see how Sehwag and Gambhir to take this setback in a step and look to prove a point if India were to qualify for the end of the course is a triangular series.

Former players on Monday lavished praise on the Indian hockey and his Australian coach Michael Nobbs to convincingly qualifying for the Olympic Games London and said the top-four finish in the quadrennial event is a high asking but not impossible for the eight-time champions.

India set up superlative performance and routed France 8-1 in the final of the men's Olympic qualifying here last night to keep date with the London Games after missing the Beijing edition four years ago.

Although they were gung-ho about the home team performance in the recently concluded Olympic qualifying here, the yesteryear stars of the game were unanimous in pointing out that India needs to address their gray areas before the London Games in July-August.

"It was an excellent performance of the team. It was heartening to see India play as a team. Full marks to Michael Nobbs to bring attacking style of hockey in India. We Indians are used to play attacking hockey, it is our own style," Zafar Iqbal, a member of India last Olympic gold medal winning team in 1980, told PTI.

"In order to qualify for the Olympic Games London is a big boost for the team. We crossed the first hurdle easily, but now the real test starts. They must now prepare for the big matches," he said.

Zafar said with a bit of hard work and determination, India can claim its top position in world hockey.

"It would be a bit too much to wait for the team to be number one on the No.10 position in the Olympic Games, but at least we hope to improve our ranking here. If we can put much more difficult to work in the coming months, maximum four goals possible."
