London: Whatever Rafael Nadal tried to throw Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday, a Frenchman, always one step ahead appeared.
Now Nadal hopes he has not left behind his passion for the game.
Qualified at the expense of Nadal Tsonga semi-final, beating the Spaniard in second place 6.7 (2), 4-6, 6-3 round-robin game decisively to join Roger Federer in the last four season ending tournament.
Nadal - who suffered his worst loss ever Federer 6-3, 6-0 loss on Tuesday - later admitted that his motivation and desire, has been lacking since losing to Novak Djokovic U.S. Open final in September. Nadal has not won a title since then, losing his only Andy Murray final in Tokyo.
"I was probably a little less passionate about the game, because I was a little more tired than usual," Nadal said. "To compete, I was not the right way."
In Tsonga, these days, you have to be.
Tall Frenchman used his powerful ground strokes and tried to dictate the play Nadal rallies to speed up and make use of the approach volley, which the Spaniard fought on the counter.
"Jo knows where I hit every ball in the course of time," Nadal said. "I was not a surprise shot during the game. So it is very difficult at this level."

"Today I just played, well, amazing tennis," Tsonga said. "I was really aggressive. I had a good percentage of winners. I put a lot of pressure on him today."
Tsonga is often dictated the rallies early on to his powerful groundstrokes and served only two break points in the first taking out the fourth game 15-40. Nadal saved the first contest in the middle of a long rally, as he correctly decided that Tsonga has had a long shot and hit another service winner.
Tsonga dominated the tiebreaker, however, won the last five points and hitting an ace on his first set point.
Nadal earned the first break of the game, Tsonga served at 5-4 in the second to force a decider. But the Frenchman soon took a pay cut of a 2-1 lead in the third fall in a gentle shot that Nadal could only into the net. Nadal then netted an easy forehand to go 5-2, with his head hanging in despair and did not fight back, Tsonga, despite giving it in the next game.
At the beginning of the game, Federer began the first set of the same type of ruthless efficiency, which helped him win the week, one hour, breaking Fish three times the first.
But the Swiss star fell from a second level of precision and energy, as the American jumped out to 5-2 lead and served as a set when Federer netted backhand.
But Federer took control of the decision immediately, breaking for 2-0 lead forehand passing shot. The fourth seeded Federer lost only two points on his serve the rest of the way into his first match point and Fish shanked a backhand wide.
"He really started to zone in many shots" in the second set, Federer said. "I thought that he was able to set up a third. So I was happy to get a significant break in the third and the cruise can be a bit more."
Federer was in the package, place in the semi-finals, while Fish were eliminated after losing their first two matches.
"Bottom line is I'm going to go 0-3, which is hard," Fish said. "But I had a great experience just being part of it. This gives you plenty of ammunition, want to come back next year."
